17-year-old European Formula 3 champion Lando Norris has been named as reserve and test driver for McLaren in 2018, replacing Jenson Button.
The rising British motorsport star first made his F1 debut testing for McLaren in Hungary over the summer. Norris was quick to impress, setting the second fastest time only to be beaten by 4 time world champion; Sebastian Vettel.
“He is an outstanding young talent” said McLaren executive director Zak Brown
His new role will see Lando regularly attending races as well as taking a more active role in testing and collecting data in the simulator back in Milton Keynes. When asked if young Norris was ready for such a role, Zak Brown replied:
“His summer test for McLaren was also remarkably impressive, and was further proof that he is ready to step up and take on a role of this size, scope and responsibility.”
It is unclear where Norris will be racing next year, with the young driver saying he will compete in either Super Formula or Formula 2 but hopes to make an announcement shortly.
